Chapter 16

Katarina

Taking a sip of coffee, I rest my elbows on the counter and close my eyes, the hot liquid giving me a burst of life. Leo surprised me. He shook Dante’s hand. He shook his hand in a silent acceptance of us.

Of course, I was told they had business to discuss and the others were coming down, so I came back up here to my apartment, unsure of what came next. But what was supposed to just be some business to discuss, turned into an all night thing, and I had to spend my night alone when all I wanted was Dante.

He doesn’t have to hold back from me anymore, but of course family business comes before my need to have him make me his.

I know there’s still the attempt on all of our lives, but there’s always going to be a threat waiting around the next corner. What matters is if I’m ready for it. If I’m prepared. I want to be a force all on my own, not just someone that needs protecting.

Downing the rest of my coffee, I call Abrianna. “Hey, Kat, how are you today?”

“Good. I was just wondering if you wanted to head down to the gym and see if we can get any of the guys to teach us some self-defense? I want to be prepared for anything.”

“What about your leg?”

“I’ll be fine. I just won’t do anything crazy.”

“Well, you’re in luck. Leo taught me a few things these past couple months and I haven’t practiced them in a while. Should I invite Angela? Tessa had to go back to Atlantic City for rehearsal.”

“Oh, too bad. But yes, invite Angela. I think it’ll be good for us all to know a few moves.”

“Exactly. I’ll come down to get you in a half hour?”

“Sounds good.”

We hang up and I brew myself another cup of coffee while I wait for her. I take my hair out of its French braids and re-do them so it’s out of my way. I still can’t take a shower or bath until tonight, so I was forced to wash my hair bent over the tub last night and to clean myself with a washcloth again. It’s seriously a hassle and I can’t wait to feel the hot stream of water from a shower again or soak in a bath with essential oils.

I slip my phone in the pocket of my sweatpants just as there’s a knock at the door. “Hey,” I greet, opening it and smiling at the two of them.

“Ready to go kick ass?” Abri asks, punching the air between us.

“Yes,” I say with a laugh, and Angela shakes her head, smiling.

“Luca thinks he’s all the protection I need, but I still want to know how to defend myself.”

Abri rolls her eyes. “Typical man. But we can’t always rely on them. They can’t be by our sides 24/7, nor do we want them to be. And it’s not even about having to use what we learn. It’s the power of knowing that you can defend yourself if necessary.
